History and Interesting Facts:
Opened in 1997, the American Jazz Museum is the only museum in the world dedicated solely to the preservation and celebration of jazz, located in the heart of Kansas City’s historic 18th & Vine Jazz District, where the city’s distinctive riff-based, blues-infused jazz style was born in the 1920s and 1930s. Housed in a modern facility alongside the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, it showcases the legacy of legends like Charlie Parker, Count Basie, and Ella Fitzgerald through interactive exhibits, including a 1930s nightclub replica and a working sound studio where visitors can mix their own jazz recordings. The museum’s Blue Room, a fully operational jazz club, hosts live performances four nights a week, recreating the vibrant atmosphere of the district’s heyday. Its collection includes rare artifacts like Parker’s saxophone and Basie’s sheet music, drawing over 80,000 visitors annually. The museum also features a Changing Gallery for traveling exhibits and offers accessibility features like wheelchair ramps and elevators, with most areas ADA-compliant. Located near the Gem Theater and Mutual Musicians Foundation, it’s a cultural cornerstone just 2 miles from downtown. With our mobility scooter rentals, guests can easily explore the district’s historic sites, restaurants, and live music venues, ensuring an accessible and immersive journey into Kansas City’s jazz heritage.
