History and Interesting Facts:
Opened in 1933, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is a cultural treasure in Kansas City, founded through the bequests of William Rockhill Nelson and Mary McAfee Atkins. Housed in a Beaux-Arts building designed by Wight and Wight, its iconic limestone facade and 17-acre sculpture garden, featuring Claes Oldenburg’s Shuttlecocks, draw over 600,000 visitors annually. The museum’s collection spans 5,000 years, with 35,000 objects, including one of the world’s finest Asian art collections, Caravaggio’s Saint John the Baptist, and works by Monet, van Gogh, and Georgia O’Keeffe. The 2007 Bloch Building expansion, designed by Steven Holl, added 165,000 square feet and earned global acclaim for its glass “lenses” that glow at night. Exhibitions in 2025 include Impressionism at 150 (through October 19) and Monet and His Muse (November 22, 2025–March 1, 2026), celebrating the artist’s water lily series. Free general admission, with select ticketed exhibits, supports accessibility, alongside programs like Art Trolley workshops and sensory-friendly days. Open Wednesday 10 AM–5 PM, Thursday–Friday 10 AM–9 PM, and Saturday–Sunday 10 AM–5 PM, it’s ADA-compliant with wheelchair rentals, accessible parking, and ramps.
