History and Interesting Facts:
Since opening in 2000, the Belger Arts Center has been a cornerstone of Kansas City’s Crossroads Arts District, encouraging exploration and appreciation of contemporary art through the John and Maxine Belger Family Foundation collection, which includes over 1,500 works by artists like Jasper Johns and William Christenberry. Housed in a 100-year-old former warehouse purchased from Kansas City Power & Light in 1946, the center has staged over 100 large-scale exhibitions featuring ceramics, paintings, sculptures, and digital media. In 2013, it expanded with Belger Crane Yard Studios (2011 Tracy Ave.), a ceramics-focused arts complex with educational programs and the Red Star Residency, and in 2021, added the Belger Glass Annex (1219 E. 19th St.), Kansas City’s first public glassblowing studio with a 300-pound molten glass furnace. The center offers free admission, ceramics and glass classes, and a gallery shop showcasing local and international artists. Open Wednesday–Friday 10 AM–4 PM, Saturday noon–4 PM, and extended hours until 9 PM on First Fridays, it’s accessible by appointment and features wheelchair-friendly spaces.
