History and Interesting Facts:
Founded in 1990 in Kansas City’s Historic 18th & Vine Jazz District, the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum (NLBM) is the world’s only national museum dedicated to preserving the rich history of African-American baseball and its impact on social justice. Established by former players like Buck O’Neil, it started as a one-room office and moved to its current 10,000-square-foot space in 1997, two blocks from the Paseo YMCA where the Negro National League was formed in 1920. The museum features a self-guided tour with text panels, hundreds of photographs, artifacts, and a Field of Legends with 10 bronze statues. Recent expansions include the “Leaders & Innovators” exhibit (May 25, 2025, through late fall), highlighting figures like Willie Wells, who pioneered the batting helmet, and a $30 million campaign to build a 30,000-square-foot facility by 2026, including the Buck O’Neil Education and Research Center and a 132-room hotel with Reggie Jackson as ambassador. The NLBM, named America’s National Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in 2006, drew record crowds in 2023 and offers free admission in February 2025, sponsored by the Kansas City Royals. Open Tuesday–Saturday 10 AM–5 PM and Sunday 12–5 PM, it’s ADA-compliant with accessible pathways. With our mobility scooter rentals, visitors can explore the museum, nearby American Jazz Museum, or 18th & Vine, ensuring an accessible and inspiring experience.
