Opened on November 10, 1999, Science City at Union Station is Kansas City’s premier interactive science center, housed in the historic Union Station, a National Historic Landmark built in 1914. Spanning 100,000 square feet, it features over 325 indoor and outdoor exhibits, including the Arvin Gottlieb Planetarium, City Extreme Screen theatre, and hands-on attractions like the Sky Bike, suspended 30 feet above ground, and Science on a Sphere. The $1 million Light Lab, unveiled in May 2025 as part of the Burns & McDonnell Battle of the Brains, spans 3,100 square feet with nine interactive zones exploring light’s science, designed by Delta Woods Middle School students. The 2024 Eye Spy exhibit, with 2,000 square feet of immersive illusions, replaced the Mister E Hotel, featuring a virtual “Travelvator” ride. Voted Kansas City’s Favorite Family-Friendly Attraction by Visit KC, it educates over 500,000 visitors annually, with 6 million since its opening. The 2025 Science of Guinness World Records exhibit runs through September 1, with $10 tickets. Open Tuesday–Saturday 10 AM–5 PM and Sunday 12–5 PM, it’s ADA-compliant with wheelchair-accessible exhibits and parking.
