Kaleidoscope, a free children’s art studio in Kansas City’s Crown Center, was founded by Hallmark Cards in 1969 as a traveling exhibit housed in colorful semi-trucks, inspiring over 2.5 million children across 12 cities annually until it found a permanent home in 1975. Conceived by Don Hall, son of Hallmark founder J.C. Hall, it encourages creative self-expression for kids aged 4–14 and their families, using recycled materials from Hallmark’s manufacturing processes, such as paper, stickers, and ribbons, alongside Crayola supplies like markers and paints. The studio, remodeled in 2022, offers 50-minute sessions Tuesday–Saturday (9:40 AM–3:50 PM), featuring activities like watercolor painting, puzzle-making, and glow-in-the-dark art in a space-themed room. Kids receive a free bag to take home their creations, with over 10,000 markers used yearly. Reservations are required for groups of 15 or more, while walk-ins are welcome for smaller groups. The center is wheelchair and stroller-accessible, with free parking on weekends and validated 3-hour parking on weekdays.
