History and Interesting Facts:
Founded in 1974 by Horace M. Peterson III, the Black Archives of Mid-America is a vital institution in Kansas City’s historic 18th & Vine Jazz District, dedicated to collecting, preserving, and sharing the social, economic, political, and cultural histories of African Americans in the central United States. Initially stored in Peterson’s car trunk and later at the Paseo YMCA, the collection moved to Fire Station No. 11 in 1980, the first Black fire station in the area, before settling at its current location in 2012 with U.S. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver II’s support. The archives house over 10,000 artifacts, including oral histories from the 1970s, the original document freeing slaves in Missouri, and soil from lynching sites. Its permanent exhibit, With My Eyes No Longer Blind, inspired by a Langston Hughes poem, traces African-American history from the Lewis and Clark expedition to Cleaver’s mayorship. The 2025 Fabrics of Africa exhibit, running through June 27, showcases vibrant African textiles, celebrating cultural resilience. Open Monday–Friday 9 AM–5 PM and weekends by appointment, the archives offer wheelchair-accessible spaces and a digital gallery featuring items like Nat King Cole’s Savoy Ballroom posters. With our mobility scooter rentals, visitors can explore the archives and nearby attractions like the American Jazz Museum, ensuring an accessible and enriching cultural experience.
