Founded in 1873, the Kansas City Public Library celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2024, with its Central Library, opened in 2004, serving as a cultural landmark in downtown Kansas City. Housed in the historic First National Bank Building (built 1906), the library’s $50 million renovation transformed it into a 190,000-square-foot hub with a striking Community Bookshelf facade, a 26-foot-tall parking garage mural featuring 22 giant book spines, including works like The Invisible Man and Charlotte’s Web, making it a social media sensation. The library, serving 250,000 residents across nine branches, a digital library, and a bookmobile, circulates 1.9 million items annually from its 1.2 million volumes. It hosts vibrant programs like the 2025 Central Youth Services Zine and free writing classes, with nearly 500 attendees in 2024–2025. A $250,000 strategic plan, funded by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, launched in 2025 to reimagine services based on community input, collected via surveys through August 12, 2025. The library’s Missouri Valley Special Collections and acquisition of The CALL’s 70,000+ photograph archive highlight its historical focus. Open Monday–Thursday 9 AM–9 PM, Friday 9 AM–5 PM, Saturday 10 AM–5 PM, and Sunday 1–5 PM, it’s ADA-compliant with elevators and accessible restrooms.
