Dedicated on November 11, 1926, by President Calvin Coolidge, the Liberty Memorial, now part of the National WWI Museum and Memorial, is a towering tribute to World War I, designated by Congress in 2004 as the nation’s official WWI museum. Located in Penn Valley Park, the 217-foot Liberty Memorial Tower, designed by Harold Van Buren Magonigle in the Egyptian Revival style, offers panoramic Kansas City skyline views from its observation deck, accessible by elevator and 45 stairs. Built with $2.5 million raised in 1919 by 83,000 Kansas Citians in just 10 days, the memorial honors the 441 local soldiers among the 400,000 U.S. casualties. The 32,000-square-foot museum, expanded in 2006, houses the world’s most comprehensive WWI collection, with exhibits like Paris at War (opening November 6, 2025) and Encounters (May 2025), featuring 16 first-person stories. The site, a National Historic Landmark since 2006, includes two Assyrian sphinxes, Memory and Future, and hosts events like the Stars and Stripes Picnic on Independence Day. Open Wednesday–Monday 10 AM–5 PM (closed Tuesdays), it’s ADA-compliant with wheelchair-accessible exhibits and parking.
