History and Interesting Facts:
Opened in 1978 as Overland Park City Farm, the Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead was renamed in 1985 to honor Deanna Rose, an Overland Park police officer killed in the line of duty, with a memorial statue added in 1989. Spanning 12 acres, this free-admission attraction (donations appreciated) draws over 700,000 visitors annually to its 1900s rural Kansas-themed setting. Home to over 250 animals, including goats, sheep, and miniature horses, it features hands-on activities like pony rides, goat bottle-feeding, and a fishing pond stocked with channel catfish. The farmstead includes a replica one-room schoolhouse, a Kanza Indian encampment, and Ben’s Bank, a child-sized bank teaching financial literacy. Recent additions include a 2024 playground expansion and the 2025 Farmstead Festival (September 20), featuring live music and harvest activities. Open daily April 1–October 31, 9 AM–5 PM (until 8 PM Tuesdays and Thursdays, June–August), it offers wagon rides and a butterfly garden. ADA-compliant with paved pathways, accessible restrooms, and wheelchair rentals, it’s located near the Overland Park Arboretum.
