Founded in 1909, the Kansas City Zoological Park spans over 200 acres in Swope Park and houses more than 1,700 animals across 200 species, making it one of the largest zoos in the Midwest. Its transformation into a world-class attraction began with a 1990s revitalization, followed by major additions like the Helzberg Penguin Plaza in 2013. The zoo’s crown jewel, the Sobela Ocean Aquarium, opened on September 1, 2023, after a decade of planning and $77 million in funding, including $45 million from a Zoological District tax. This 650,000-gallon aquarium, named for the Helzberg family’s grandchildren, features 8,000 animals across 200 species, including sea otters, sharks, and Tortellini, a green sea turtle with a weighted backpack for buoyancy issues. The aquarium’s six zones, from warm coastlines to cold shallows, offer touch pools and immersive exhibits. The zoo hosts events like the 2025 Dinosaurs Around the World exhibit (through August 24) and Brew at the Zoo (October 11), with attractions like the Flying Flamingo Zipline and Glowild: Time Traveler light show. Open Monday–Friday 9:30 AM–4 PM and Saturday–Sunday 9:30 AM–5 PM, it’s ADA-compliant with wheelchair rentals and accessible pathways.
