Opened in 1950 in Swope Park, Starlight Theatre is Kansas City’s oldest and largest performing arts organization, celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2025. This 7,739-seat outdoor venue, one of only two self-producing outdoor theatres in the U.S., was sparked by a 1925 visit from Romania’s Queen Marie, leading to a $1.5 million construction funded by community efforts for Kansas City’s centennial. The 2000 Jeannette and Jerome Cohen Community Stage addition enabled major Broadway tours like Miss Saigon. The 2025 AdventHealth Broadway Series, all debuting at Starlight, includes Mean Girls (June 10–15), School of Rock (July 8–13), Ain’t Too Proud (July 22–27), Disney’s Frozen (August 5–10), and Life of Pi (September 16–21). Open for shows at 8 PM (concerts vary), it offers free parking, ADA-compliant seating, and accessible pathways, though the 63rd Street entrance is closed until July 26, 2025, requiring Elmwood or Meyer/Swope Parkway entries.
