Opened on October 25, 2007, the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art (NMOCA) at Johnson County Community College is a cultural gem, housing one of the nation’s top collections of contemporary art with over 1,900 works by emerging and established artists like Do Ho Suh and Nick Cave. Founded with a $1.5 million pledge from Jerry and Margaret Nerman, the $15 million museum, designed by architect Kyu Sung Woo, features a minimalist Kansas limestone exterior and a dazzling 60,000-LED installation by Leo Villareal at its cantilever entrance. Recognized by Public Art Review as one of America’s top 10 university campuses for public art, it showcases sculptures, paintings, and ceramics across 11 galleries. Current 2025 exhibitions include A Match Made in Heaven: Katherine Bernhardt x Jeremy Scott (through October 26) and Amy Kligman: The Salon for Possible Futures (through December 21), a living room-inspired think tank. Upcoming shows feature Linda Lighton: Love & War, A Fifty-Year Survey (December 13, 2025–May 3, 2026), with a book signing on September 17, 2025. Attracting over 100,000 visitors annually, it offers free admission and a digital guide via Bloomberg Connects. Open Tuesday–Saturday 10 AM–5 PM (Wednesday–Thursday until 8 PM) and Sunday 12–5 PM, it’s ADA-compliant with accessible entrances and parking.
