Opened in 1999 as part of Science City at Union Station, the Arvin Gottlieb Planetarium is a state-of-the-art facility within the historic 1914 Union Station, named after a major donation from the Gottlieb family. Featuring a 60-foot dome and a Digistar 7 projection system, it immerses audiences in breathtaking cosmic journeys, seating 150 for shows like Black Holes: The Other Side of Infinity and Cosmic Adventure, narrated by Neil deGrasse Tyson. With over 300 shows annually, it educates 50,000+ visitors, including 10,000 students, through programs like the 2025 Stars Over Kansas City series, offering live-guided tours of the night sky. The planetarium, upgraded in 2023 with new projectors and sound, hosts special events like Laser Light Shows featuring Pink Floyd and Queen, and Cosmic Kids for ages 4–8, running through August 2025. Ticket prices ($8 adults, $6 kids) include same-day Science City access, with free admission for Union Station members. Open Tuesday–Saturday 10 AM–5 PM and Sunday 12–5 PM, it’s ADA-compliant with wheelchair-accessible seating and ramps.
