History and Interesting Facts:
Dedicated on November 11, 1926, by President Calvin Coolidge, the National WWI Museum and Memorial, originally the Liberty Memorial, was designated by Congress in 2004 as the United States’ official World War I museum. Located in Penn Valley Park, the 217-foot Liberty Memorial Tower, designed in the Egyptian Revival style by Harold Van Buren Magonigle, was funded by a $2.5 million community drive in 1919, completed in just 10 days by 83,000 Kansas Citians. The expanded 32,000-square-foot museum, opened in 2006, houses the world’s most comprehensive WWI collection, with over 75,000 artifacts, including a 1917 Harley-Davidson motorcycle, trench art, and interactive exhibits like Paris at War (opening November 6, 2025) and Encounters (May 2025), featuring 16 first-person stories. Attracting over 700,000 visitors annually, it includes a replica French trench, a theater with immersive films, and the observation deck offering panoramic skyline views (accessible by elevator, though 45 stairs are required for the final ascent). The site, a National Historic Landmark since 2006, hosts events like the Stars and Stripes Picnic and Veterans Day ceremonies. Open Wednesday–Monday 10 AM–5 PM (closed Tuesdays), it’s ADA-compliant with wheelchair-accessible exhibits, ramps, and parking. With our mobility scooter rentals, visitors can explore the museum, tower grounds, or nearby Money Museum, ensuring an accessible and profound historical experience.
