History and Interesting Facts:
Opened in 1982 as the Toy and Miniature Museum of Kansas City, The National Museum of Toys and Miniatures, located on the University of Missouri-Kansas City campus, was renamed in 2015 after a $11 million renovation. Housed in the historic Tureman Mansion (built 1911), it showcases the world’s largest collection of fine-scale miniatures and one of the nation’s largest historic toy collections, with over 94,000 objects. Founded by collectors Mary Harris Francis and Barbara Hall Marshall, the 33,000-square-foot museum features intricate 1:12 scale miniatures, like an Italian Renaissance studio, and toys dating back to 1750, including the English wooden doll Georgiana. The 2025 exhibit The Nostalgia Awakens: Retro Kenner Star Wars Action Figure Toys (through January 27, 2026) displays local collector Duncann Jenkins’ extensive Star Wars memorabilia, complemented by three public events. The museum earned a 2025 AASLH Award of Excellence for its Portraits of Childhood: Black Dolls exhibit, featuring 135 handmade Black dolls from 1850–1940. Open Wednesday–Monday 10 AM–4 PM (closed Tuesdays), it’s ADA-compliant with accessible parking and wide galleries. With our mobility scooter rentals, visitors can explore the museum, nearby Nelson-Atkins Museum, or Country Club Plaza, ensuring an accessible and nostalgic experience.
