Opened on June 9, 2011, Children’s Mercy Park is a state-of-the-art, soccer-specific stadium in Kansas City, Kansas, serving as the home of Sporting Kansas City (MLS) and previously FC Kansas City (NWSL, 2015–2017) and Kansas City Current (NWSL, 2022–2023). Designed by Populous and built for $200 million, the 18,467-seat venue, expandable to 25,000 for concerts, replaced the Kansas City Wizards’ earlier homes at Arrowhead Stadium and CommunityAmerica Ballpark. Known as “The Blue Hell” for its electric atmosphere, it hosted the 2013 MLS All-Star Game, MLS Cup 2013, and major events like the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup. The stadium boasts three Daktronics video boards and has maintained an MLS sellout streak exceeding 100 games. A $70 million renovation, set for completion by May 2026, will transform 11 acres into a 90,000-square-foot outdoor plaza with a new stage and videoboard for concerts, FIFA World Cup watch parties, and graduations, accommodating up to 9,000 people. Notable moments include Sporting KC’s 2013 MLS Cup victory and performances by artists like Dave Matthews at the 2011 Farm Aid.
