Downtown Liberty's historic square is home to the Jesse James Bank Museum, the actual site of what's considered the first successful daylight bank robbery during peacetime in American history. It's a small, walkable square with real 19th-century architecture, not a manufactured tourist stop. Liberty is also home to William Jewell College — whose founders, notably, included the Reverend Robert James, Jesse James's own father, a Baptist minister.
