History & character

The Eldridge Hotel's history mirrors Lawrence's own founding-era story. The original Free State Hotel on this site was burned during the pro-slavery sack of Lawrence in 1856; rebuilt and burned again in Quantrill's 1863 raid; rebuilt again as the Eldridge House. The current building dates to a 1925 reconstruction and has operated as the Eldridge through several restorations. Today's hotel preserves the period architecture inside while retrofitting modern accessibility, and sits at 7th & Massachusetts in the heart of downtown Lawrence's pedestrian corridor.
