The Pony Express began in St. Joseph in April 1860, and the National Pony Express Museum now occupies the actual brick stables where riders once saddled up for the 1,900-mile relay to Sacramento. A few blocks away, the small house at 12th and Penn is preserved as the Jesse James Home Museum — where James was living under an alias when he was shot and killed in 1882.
