Mentorship for Starting a Mobility Rental Business

This page isn't for renting equipment — if that's what you're after, here's what we rent. This is for the handful of people who email me every month asking how the business actually works, and who would rather be walked through it than guess.

I'm Jeff Guzman. I retired after twenty years in the U.S. Army and started KC Mobility Scooter Rentals in 2023. 3 years later I still load the van myself. No staff, no warehouse, no investors — just equipment, a phone, and showing up when I said I would.

I mentor people setting up the same kind of business in their own towns. One to one, on the phone, about your market rather than a generic playbook.

How the mentorship works

  1. We talk first, free One call about where you are and what your town looks like. If I don't think the market supports it, or I'm not the right person to help, I'll tell you on that call.
  2. We set the sessions How often we speak and for how long depends on what you need. You will know what it costs before you agree to anything.
  3. You build it, I answer You do the work — the equipment, the calls, the deliveries. I'm the person you ring when something comes up that you have never seen before.

What we work through

I'm not going to quote you an income figure. Anyone who does, on a business they've never seen you run in a town they've never been to, is guessing — and you should treat the number accordingly.

What we can work on is the shape of the thing:

  • What you need on day one How few pieces of equipment you can genuinely start with, what they cost, and which ones earn their keep first.
  • What the day looks like Delivery is the business. Two drops across a metro can eat a morning, and that fact shapes your pricing more than anything else.
  • Where the customers come from Hotels, events, families visiting for a weekend, people recovering from surgery. They find you in different ways and they are worth different amounts.
  • The quiet months Every market has them. Knowing when yours are is the difference between a slow January and a frightening one.
  • What goes wrong Equipment comes back damaged, batteries die mid-rental, someone books for a day they meant to book next week. None of it is unusual and all of it is survivable.

What mentorship isn't

It isn't a course, a license or a franchise. You're not buying my name, my suppliers or my customers, and there's no system to follow — just my time and what I've learned using it. I can't promise you an outcome in a business I don't run, and I'd rather say that here than have you find it out later.

If what you actually want is customers rather than coaching, say so and I'll point you at the lead generation page instead. Most people who contact me want one or the other, rarely both at once.

Watch first, if you'd rather

I put the day-to-day of running this on YouTube — the equipment, the deliveries, the parts nobody warns you about. It costs nothing and you'll get a fair sense of whether this is a business you'd want before you ever speak to me.

Straight answers

What does the mentorship actually involve?
Calls with me, one to one, about your business and your town — not a video course you work through alone. We start with where you are, what you can spend, and whether your market can support it. After that the sessions follow whatever is in front of you that month: buying the first equipment, setting rates, your first hotel, the first thing that goes wrong. Between calls you can email me. There's no portal to log into and no modules to complete.
What does it cost?
It depends on how much of my time you want and over how long, so I'd rather work that out with you than post a number for a situation I haven't seen. The first conversation costs nothing and has no obligation — if I don't think I can help you, I'll say so on that call rather than sell you sessions.
How much money can I make doing this?
I won't give you a number, and I'd be wary of anyone who does. What I can tell you is what actually drives the work: how many pieces of equipment you need to start, what they cost, what delivery does to your day, which customers come back, and where the quiet months are. Those decide whether it works in your town, and they vary enormously by market.
Do you guarantee it will work?
No. I'm not going to promise you an outcome in a business I don't run, in a town I don't live in, with equipment I don't own. What I can promise is that I'll tell you the truth about what I did, what it cost me, and what I got wrong — including the parts that make the business sound less appealing than the internet says it is.
Won't you be creating your own competition?
Not really. I deliver in the Kansas City metro. If you're in Boise or Tampa, we're not competing for the same customer — and travelers move between cities constantly, which is why I already keep a page of independent rental companies I'm glad to recommend. Someone running a good operation in another city is more useful to me than an empty market there.
What kind of person does this suit?
Someone who doesn't mind loading equipment into a van at seven in the morning, and who can be genuinely reliable about it. This is a hospitality business with a logistics problem attached. The equipment is the easy part; showing up when you said you would, every time, is the whole job.
What if I'm already running one?
Then mentorship still works, but the questions change — pricing, repeat customers, why the phone is quiet in February. Plenty of people want customers rather than coaching, and that's what the lead generation and website pages are for. Or if you'd like to be listed alongside the other independent companies I recommend to travelers, email me at jeff@kcmobilityrentals.com.
