JCCC Commencement: Mobility Scooter Rental & Visitor Guide

Dates:
Two ceremonies on one day in late May — recently 3 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. (2027 date not yet published)
Venue:
JCCC Gymnasium

JCCC commencement is in the campus Gymnasium in Overland Park, with two ceremonies on one day. The college publishes ADA parking and a mobility drop-off near the Gym entrance, but gym seating is unassigned, and that is the part worth planning around.

Johnson County Community College holds commencement on its own campus at 12345 College Blvd, Overland Park, in the JCCC Gymnasium, with overflow seating and a livestream in the Fieldhouse below it. It has been the same venue for several years running, which makes planning easier here than at the schools that move.

There are two ceremonies on one day in mid-to-late May, split by degree type, with the gym opening an hour before each. Each runs about ninety minutes.

What JCCC publishes for guests with mobility needs

This is one of the better-documented graduations in the area:

The thing to plan around

Gym seating is ticketed but unassigned. Tickets are required for gym entry (four guaranteed per registered graduate, with unticketed overflow in the Fieldhouse), but there is no reserved accessible seating section published, and seats are first-come.

In practice that means arriving early matters more here than at a venue with assigned ADA seating, and it means the walk from the parking lot happens before the good seats go. JCCC's own advice is to "plan to arrive early to allow time for parking and walking to the Gym." If someone in your group is slow over distance, those two pressures pull against each other. A scooter or a rollator with a seat takes the pressure off both.

What we do

We deliver a scooter, wheelchair, transport chair or rollator to your home or hotel, cleaned and charged, and collect it afterwards. Most local families take delivery the day before and drive it over; families flying in have it waiting at the hotel.

If you are not sure which piece of equipment you need, say what the day looks like and we will tell you. For a ninety-minute ceremony where the hard part is the parking lot and the line, a rollator with a seat is often the right answer and costs less than a scooter. We would rather get that right than sell you up.

A caution about "JCCC graduation"

JCCC runs a lot of May ceremonies in different buildings (Honors, nursing pinning, the Fire Academy, GED, the Police Academy) in Yardley Hall, the Polsky Theatre, the Capitol Federal Conference Center and elsewhere. The parking and the walk differ by building. If the ceremony you are attending is not the main commencement in the Gymnasium, tell us which one it is, because the answer about distance changes.

Booking

Tell us the date, the ceremony time, and where you are staying. May is the busiest month in this business and commencement weekends are the tightest dates in it. Call as soon as you have the date.

Questions people ask us

Where is accessible parking for JCCC commencement?
JCCC publishes that ADA parking is in designated lots closest to the venue with posted signage on arrival, and that drop-off areas are available near the Gym entrance for guests with mobility needs. Enter campus via the Westgate/College Boulevard entrance; commencement parking is on the north and west sides.
Is there reserved accessible seating?
Not as published. Gym entry is ticketed, with four tickets guaranteed per graduate, but seating is unassigned and first-come, and JCCC does not publish a dedicated ADA seating section. That is the main reason to arrive early, and the main reason a seat-equipped rollator or a scooter helps.
Does JCCC provide wheelchairs?
Not that the college publishes. If someone needs a wheelchair, a scooter or a rollator for the day, plan to bring it. Access Services (913-469-3521) is the right number for questions about interpreting, captioning and specific needs.
Which equipment suits a ninety-minute ceremony?
Often a rollator with a seat rather than a scooter. The hard part is usually the parking lot, the line and the standing around, not the ceremony itself. It is also cheaper. Tell us what the day looks like and we will say which we think you actually need.
Can you deliver to the campus?
We normally deliver to your home or hotel the day before, which is simpler than a handover in a busy parking lot on ceremony day. If that will not work for you, call us and we will talk it through.
Our ceremony is not in the Gym. Does that change anything?
Yes. JCCC holds several other May ceremonies in Yardley Hall, the Polsky Theatre, the Capitol Federal Conference Center and other buildings, and the parking and walking distance differ by building. Tell us which ceremony you are attending.
