The Events You Go to for Someone Else

A grandchild's graduation. A family weekend on a campus you've never walked before. The homecoming game, the craft fair, the town parade. Nobody buys a ticket to these thinking about distance — and then the day arrives and the parking is half a mile from the ceremony.

What we mean by community events

Graduations & college family weekends

The strongest reason on this page to book ahead. Grandparents travel for these, the campus is bigger than anyone remembers, and parking is nowhere near the ceremony.

Festivals & street fairs

Hours on your feet, usually outdoors, usually further than it looks on the map.

City days, parades, trick-or-treat & trunk-or-treats

Town celebrations, parades, and the Halloween route. Trunk-or-treats are held on parking lots and school fields — flat, but a long evening on your feet in the dark.

Farmers & flea markets, craft fairs

Slow walking, frequent stops, and nowhere obvious to sit down.

High school & college games

Going to watch a grandchild play. Bleachers, a long walk in, and often a hill.

If it's a graduation, book early

Commencement weekends are the one time of year we genuinely run out. Every family in the same position books the same Saturday, and the dates are known months in advance — so the people who call in March get equipment and the people who call the week before sometimes don't.

It is not the ceremony

It is the walk from parking, the standing before and after, and an hour of photographs on the lawn when everyone is already tired.

Deliver to the hotel

Simpler than campus on the morning. The equipment is waiting when you wake up and you drive it over with everything else.

Questions families ask

How far ahead should we book for a graduation?
As soon as you know the date, and for commencement weekends that can be months. Every family in the same position is booking the same weekend, and a campus graduation is the one event a year where we genuinely run out. If you are reading this in April about a May ceremony, call today rather than tomorrow.
Can you deliver to the campus itself?
Usually we deliver to the hotel, which is simpler for everyone — the equipment is there when you wake up and you drive it over. Campus delivery on a commencement morning is possible but it is the busiest, most congested place in the county that day, so we will talk through where and when rather than promise a spot on the lawn.
It is only a few hours. Is it worth renting?
Often yes, and not for the reason people expect. It is rarely the ceremony — it is the walk from parking, the standing around before and after, and the photographs on the lawn afterwards where everyone else is on their feet for another hour. That is the part that ends a day early.
What about a farmers market or a craft fair?
Those are slow walking with frequent stops and nowhere to sit, which is harder on someone than a straight mile. A rollator with a seat is often the better answer than a scooter, and it is cheaper — we will tell you which we think you need rather than selling you up.
Do you rent for a high school game?
Yes. It is usually the walk from the lot and the hill up to the field rather than the game itself. Worth knowing that bleachers are their own problem — a scooter gets someone there comfortably but it does not get them up into the stand, so ask the school about accessible seating at the same time you call us.
What about trick-or-treating or a trunk-or-treat?
One of the better reasons on this page, and people rarely think of it until the night. Trick-or-treating is a mile or more of stop-start walking in the dark, and a trunk-or-treat is a long evening standing on a parking lot or a school field. If a grandparent wants to walk the route with the grandchildren rather than wait in the car, that is exactly what a scooter is for. Book the week before — the 31st is busy for us.
Is a city-wide garage sale worth renting for?
Honestly, usually not. People walk a few houses and drive between streets, so the equipment spends the day in the boot. We would rather say that than take the booking — if you are doing one street on foot for hours, that is different, so tell us what you are actually planning.
