Of every college graduation in the Kansas City area, this is the one where the school tells you most plainly what you are walking into.
Kansas City Kansas Community College holds its commencement at Sporting Park, the soccer stadium at 1 Sporting Way in Kansas City, Kansas. It is outdoors, it is in the evening, and it is big. KCKCC's own graduation pages say so in unusually direct language.
What the college publishes
Read this before you decide whether someone in your family can manage the evening on foot:
- "Sporting Park is a large venue and the graduation procession is 3/4 mile." That is the college's own sentence, written for graduates.
- Graduates are told to wear comfortable shoes because "there are stairs in each section" and "it's almost a mile walk" to the ceremony.
- For guests: "Sporting Park is a large venue and there are long distances to walk."
- And the part that matters most here: "If you require a device to navigate long distances, you will need to bring your own device. KCKCC will not provide personal devices such as wheelchairs, walkers, canes, etc."
- The college also states that KCKCC and Sporting Park employees are not permitted to push wheelchairs during the ceremony, and that a family member or guest needs to be arranged in advance to do it.
That is a school being honest rather than one hiding a problem, and it is the clearest possible answer to "do we really need to rent something?" If the person coming with you cannot comfortably walk close to a mile, then yes, and you need to bring it yourself.
Where we come in
We deliver a mobility scooter, wheelchair, transport chair or rollator to wherever you are staying, set up and charged, and collect it when you are done. You drive it over, use it for the evening, and hand it back.
Most families book delivery to their hotel the day before. If relatives are flying in for this, that is the simplest version. The equipment is waiting when they wake up, and nobody is solving a mobility problem at five in the afternoon on graduation day.
Getting in, parked, and seated
From KCKCC's published ceremony information:
- Guest and ADA parking is in Blue Lot 1 and Blue Lot 2. The ADA drop-off point is on State Avenue, in the right turn lane to Sporting Way.
- From the Blue lots, the route is the path between Blue Lots 1 and 2, across State Avenue, in through the State Avenue Gate.
- The parking lot opens at 4 p.m., and vehicles must be out within an hour of the ceremony finishing.
- Accessible seating for guests is on the upper level, which is the entry level of the park, so guests using the accessible seating do not have to go down into the bowl.
- For ADA assistance on the night, the Guest Experience Kiosk is at Section 101.
- KCKCC asks that able-bodied guests take standard seats so the ADA platforms stay available for people using wheelchairs or crutches and one companion.
Free guest tickets are required and are distributed through the college. There is a clear-bag policy and the stadium is cashless.
Two things that catch people out
The date can move on the day. The ceremony is outdoors and KCKCC publishes a rain date. In 2026 it was used. The ceremony shifted from Thursday to Friday because of forecast storms. If you are renting equipment, tell us that when you book and we will plan the collection around it rather than around a fixed date.
Accessible seating is not the same as a short walk. Upper-level seating solves the stairs. It does not shorten the distance from the Blue lots to the gate. Those are separate problems and the equipment solves the second one.
Who to ask at the college
KCKCC routes graduation accommodations through Student Accessibility and Support Services (SASS): Upper Jewell Room 3384, 913-288-7664, sass@kckcc.edu. There is an accommodation form for the ceremony with a published deadline, so it is worth doing early rather than in the last week.
We are not the college and cannot arrange seating or tickets. What we can do is make sure the person you are bringing is not the one deciding, halfway across a stadium parking lot, whether they can make it to the gate.
Booking
Call and tell us the date, where you are staying, and roughly how far the person will need to go. Commencement weekends are the tightest dates in our year. When a whole graduating class's families book the same Saturday, we run out. Call as soon as you know the date rather than the week before.
"Children's Mercy Park" and "Sporting Park" are the same stadium
If an older relative is looking for Children's Mercy Park, that is this venue. KCKCC's own 2025 release celebrated its 100th commencement at "Children's Mercy Park"; the 2026 release celebrated the 101st at "Sporting Park." The stadium was renamed. Same address, 1 Sporting Way. The 2026 article even still refers to "Children's Mercy Park" in one of its bullets, so expect to see both names in circulation.
Put 1 Sporting Way, Kansas City, KS 66111 in the GPS and ignore the name on the sign.
