University Health — known by Kansas Citians for decades as Truman Medical Centers, formally renamed University Health in 2022 — is the metro’s safety-net academic medical center, occupying a major footprint on Hospital Hill just east of Crown Center. The campus includes the main hospital, the Behavioral Health Center, the Lakewood satellite, and the affiliated UMKC School of Medicine. For families coming to KC to support a patient through a multi-day admission, the campus is large, the days are long, and the walking adds up.
This page is for those families. It’s not a medical resource — for clinical or admission questions, work with the hospital directly. What this page covers is the logistics of a multi-day family-caregiver visit, including the mobility scooter rental that makes long hospital days physically sustainable.
Why mobility delivery makes sense at Truman
A typical multi-day visit involves: parking adjacent to the patient tower, crossing through visitor lobbies, riding elevators to a patient floor, walking corridors to the room, returning to the cafeteria or lounge between visits, and repeating that loop several times a day. By day three of a stay-with-the-patient visit, even family members who walk fine in normal life are tired enough that everything else suffers.
A rented mobility scooter collapses the corridor walks, makes the cafeteria and gift shop and chapel easy to reach without budgeting for them, and conserves energy for the parts of the day that actually matter — sitting with the patient, talking with the care team, supporting the people you’re there for.
How the rental works
Standard hotel-delivery workflow:
- Book online with a Crown Center or downtown KCMO hotel as the delivery location.
- The scooter is staged at the hotel bell stand before your check-in.
- You drive or rideshare from the hotel to accessible parking at the hospital.
- At checkout, leave the scooter at the same bell stand; we pick it up next morning.
Crown Center hotels are particularly convenient — physically closer to Hospital Hill than most downtown properties, and the front-desk teams at the Westin and Sheraton have handled hundreds of our handoffs.
Hospital Hill is a cluster
University Health (Truman), Children’s Mercy, and the UMKC Health Sciences campus all sit on the same Hospital Hill. For families with relationships across multiple institutions (a patient at one, family at another, a clinic appointment at a third), the same rental covers the entire hill across the visit.
