KU Commencement is the largest single-day visitor event in Lawrence each year. Twenty-thousand-plus graduates, parents, grandparents, siblings, partners, and extended families converge on Mount Oread for one weekend in mid-May. The defining moment is the Walk Down the Hill — a tradition unique to KU, where graduates in caps and gowns process from the Campanile bell tower at the top of the hill down a paved path to Memorial Stadium for the main ceremony.
For the graduate, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime moment. For older relatives — grandparents who flew in, parents recovering from surgery, anyone with stamina or mobility limits — the day is logistically demanding. The walk is downhill (so easier going down than coming up), paved, well-managed by KU, and lined with thousands of family members trying to find their graduate among the procession. Then everyone packs into Memorial Stadium for the main ceremony. Then back to the hotel. Then graduation dinners.
We rent mobility scooters and wheelchairs to make graduation weekend manageable for those visitors. Hotel-delivered to your Lawrence base, yours for the trip.
How graduation-weekend mobility actually works
The standard plan is hotel-delivered scooter, used end-to-end across the weekend. A representative timeline for grandparents flying in for a grandchild’s graduation:
Day before Commencement (Friday, in most years):
- Land at MCI / Kansas City International Airport.
- Drive or rideshare to Lawrence hotel.
- Scooter waiting at the hotel front desk, tagged with grandparents’ name.
- Take possession at check-in.
- Family graduation dinner that evening (downtown Lawrence on Massachusetts Street is the popular choice — the Eldridge Hotel is right there).
Commencement morning:
- Scooter from hotel to viewing position. If staying at the Oread, the route to the Campanile is ~3 minutes. If staying downtown, rideshare to a campus drop-off and roll from there.
- Watch the Walk Down the Hill — most accessible viewing is at the bottom of the hill near Memorial Stadium, where the scooter has level ground and the family can regroup with the graduate after the procession.
- Roll into Memorial Stadium via accessible entry.
- Park the scooter at your accessible seat for the main ceremony.
Post-ceremony:
- Scooter back to the hotel via the same route.
- Family graduation dinner, party, and any departure logistics.
Pickup:
- We collect the scooter at your hotel on departure morning.
That’s the trip. Hotel delivery is the foundation. The scooter is yours from check-in to check-out.
Best Lawrence hotel for graduation weekend
The Oread Hotel at 12th & Oread is the single best position for graduation-weekend mobility. The hotel sits directly on the KU campus boundary — the Campanile is a 3-minute roll, Memorial Stadium is ~14 minutes, Allen Fieldhouse (for any non-football events) is similar distance. Most graduation guests booking the Oread are doing so specifically to minimize logistics on Commencement day. Book 4-6 months ahead — the Oread sells out for graduation weekend.
The Eldridge Hotel on Massachusetts Street is downtown Lawrence’s historic flagship. It’s the social hub for graduation dinners — the on-property restaurant, the bar, and the surrounding Mass Street dining run dense for the weekend. Trade-off: the Eldridge is downtown, not on campus, so the campus leg of graduation morning involves a rideshare or a longer roll uphill (Mount Oread is real — uphill from downtown is not a casual roll for a scooter user). For families whose itinerary centers on dinners and ceremonies more than the campus walk itself, the Eldridge is the right base.
Hampton Inn Lawrence and Hilton Garden Inn Lawrence are chain-brand suburban-style hotels with reliable Hilton Honors program benefits and better late-booking availability than the Oread or Eldridge. Both are short-drive bases — guests rideshare to campus on Commencement morning. Pragmatic choices for guests who book later or who want predictable chain-brand amenities.
Outside Lawrence: some families base in Kansas City and drive in for graduation morning. The drive from downtown KC to Lawrence is ~45 minutes without traffic, but graduation weekend traffic into Lawrence can add 30-60 minutes to that on the morning of. We can deliver to a KC hotel and you’ll have the scooter for both the KC leg and the day trip to Lawrence.
Walk Down the Hill — viewing positions for scooter users
The Walk Down the Hill processes from the Campanile down a sloped paved path through campus to Memorial Stadium. Key viewing positions for scooter users:
-
At the Campanile (top of the hill): Family standing at the start sees the graduate at the moment of formation. Crowded, but the view is iconic. Accessible-seating areas at the top are limited; arrive early.
-
Mid-route on the path: Less crowded than the Campanile or stadium ends. Multiple shaded sections (rare on the route — take advantage). Most scooter-using viewers find a stable position 1/3 to 2/3 of the way down and stay put for the procession.
-
At Memorial Stadium gate (bottom of the hill): This is the recommended spot for most scooter users. Level ground, easy access into the stadium’s accessible entry afterward, the family can regroup with the graduate the moment the procession ends. Many families default here.
-
Inside Memorial Stadium: Pre-position in your accessible seat before the Walk begins. You’ll see the procession enter the stadium and the graduate walk to their assigned section. The stadium scoreboard and PA carry the rest of the ceremony.
Other KU events with the same delivery model
- Family Weekend (typically October) — Football game weekend with parent-and-family-focused programming. Same mobility model: hotel delivery, scooter for the weekend, accessible seating at Memorial Stadium and Allen Fieldhouse for any games or events.
- Homecoming (typically October) — Alumni weekend. Same plan.
- Senior Sendoff (early May, before Commencement) — KU’s pre-graduation tradition. Smaller event but same logistics for visiting family.
- KU Football / KU Basketball — covered separately at our Sporting Events pillar; for KU-specific game weekends, the same Lawrence hotels apply.
Reserve early — Lawrence hotel inventory is the binding constraint
Once a graduating family has a Lawrence hotel confirmed, our weekend capacity is the easier piece. The bottleneck is hotel availability — the Oread and Eldridge sell out 4-6 months ahead, the Hampton and HGI sell out 1-3 months ahead. Many families end up basing in Kansas City and driving in for Commencement morning.
Whatever your hotel, reserve the scooter the moment you have lodging confirmed. Call (913) 775-1098 or book online — we’ll match the rental to your specific dates and your hotel’s delivery workflow.
